Record Group
The Record Group was formed in 1948 with the objective of staging an exhibition recording the history of the Borough of Tynemouth for its centenary in 1949. By the time of the Centenary, the group had amassed a total of about 350 prints, from which an exhibition of 60 prints was displayed in the hall of the Memorial Methodist Church. Since its inception the group has amassed more than 2,000 prints, which are now also stored as digital files. In 2025 the Society decided that any new additions to the archive would only be stored as digital images.
The archive covers the area of North Tyneside which formed the old County Borough of Tynemouth, namely North Shields, Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Whitley Bay and areas immediately adjacent to these towns.
The group considers accepting donations of images of current or possible future historical interest, in any format including video clips from mobile phones and prints which can be scanned.
Live presentations of images from the collection can be arranged for interested groups, either in our club rooms or at other suitable venues.
Two books of images from the archive are also available direct from the society or from various local stockists.
